Level 3 Certificate for Forest School Leaders
You will qualify as Forest School Leader, which will enable you to set up and run a Forest School programme, the children, young people and adults.
Training Days
- 6 Theory days based at our Salford Centres
- 2 Practical days based at our Salford Centres
Location
Our Training Centre is based 10 minutes outside of central Manchester.
We have a beautiful enclosed setting which backs directly onto a large woodland. Our Centre includes classrooms, a kitchen, toilet facilities and an enclosed forest school space. There is plenty of parking and we are near central Manchester railway stations.

What the course cover:
Theory
You will gain knowledge about Outdoor Learning and the Forest School ethos and 6 principles
Some of the areas covered include – Learning Approaches, Play and Learning in the Natural Environment, Holistic Development of Learners, How to Sustainably Manage Natural Resources and Identify Flora and Fauna.
Creating Working Documents
You will learn how to create all the working documents that you will need to set up and lead your own forest school.
Some of the areas covered include – risk-benefit assessments, health and safety policies and procedures, ecological surveys and sustainable management planning. There is a comprehensive resource booklet that accompanies the course which includes templates and examples.
Delivering, Observing, Assessing Forest School Sessions
You will develop the techniques needed to lead and evaluate Forest Schools sessions along the pedagogy approach and become a reflective practitioner. This is supported by a “team teaching” during your training.
Some of the areas covered include – reflective planning, formative observational techniques and summative assessments.
Forest School Practical
You will gain hands on experience and learn practical skills, crafts and activities, with lots of opportunities to practice, share learning and utilise one to one support.
- Create your own “Forest School Handbook.”
- Prepare and deliver a minimum of 6 Forest School sessions, where you lead your own group of learners. (We can help provide a group for you to work with if needed)
- Compile a portfolio of evidence, which will be completed within 9 months of starting the training
The portfolio is made up of the following 5 units:
- Supporting learning, play and development in the outdoors.
- Observation and evaluation of outdoor learning.
- Sustainable use of natural resources.
- Teaching outdoor practical skills.
- Forest school leader.
- On-line Tutorials and Email support for your personal trainer
- Peers support messaging groups.
Assessment
- You will be assessed by your trainer during the 2 practical days.
- Your trainer will visit your Forest School site to observe and assess at one of your 6 sessions delivery
- Your portfolio will be assessed throughout the course, with a final assessment within 12 months of starting the training
Timescale
It takes between 9 and 12 months to qualify as a Level 3 Forest School Leader and it is recommended that a minimum of 180 hours of independent learning will be required (this equates to around 5 hours a week across a 9 month period).
Once you have finished the 8 days of training you can start running your own forest school sessions and gain the practical knowledge and experience required to complete the course.
Cost
The total cost of the 12 month course is £1000. We also offer a set amount of places on flexible payment options which allow learners to pay over the remainder (after paying the deposit) over several months.
